Excellent analysis of the situation. I wish more of those who have a larger platform for disseminating information could articulate this no win situation in such a clear, concise manner.

Americans are doers and the hard words here are that doing nothing is the correct action, no matter how we may wish to fix things, this is not fixable.

Tim Chesterton

Yes, this is a good analysis. Of course, as some here will know, I'm a pacifist, so I'm against military action on principle. But you don't have to be a pacifist to see the potential pitfalls. Who would we be helping? What would victory look like?

Also, I think folks in the Middle East are frankly tired of us telling them how we think they should run their lives. Right or wrong, they see it as a continuation of colonialism. And it's not even effective colonialism; we (the West) don't have a very good track record of getting good long-term results in that region.

Rick

I also hope Tim, that we've learned our lessons in Iraq and Afghanistan. I certainly have. I've completely lost the idealism I once had of democratizing this region... Completely.

No more American blood should be shed. No more innocent life should be lost.

Tim Chesterton

I completely agree with you, Rick. When you think how many centuries it took for democracy to evolve in the West - and, in some cases, the stages it went through (all male landowners - all males - all people except slaves who weren't defined as people etc.), I think it's incredibly naive to think the West can impose it by force and have it take root in a few short years.
