Hello there! Indeed there were pretty tough negotiations to get that extra signing bonus. I'm feeling a little sheepish about getting twice as much as Fr. Tim's, especially after such kindness from him. When Rick brought up the idea of me offering things to Brutally Honest, I couldn’t imagine what I’d say, but this morning Chuck Colson appeared in my inbox. I suppose it’s not surprising he’s been interested in Mark Felt’s big news:
Mark Felt, a consummate FBI professional, whom I dealt with often and trusted completely, turns out to have engaged in cloak-and-dagger escapades worthy of a Fredrick Forsythe novel in order to bring down what he believed was a corrupt presidency. Was he a hero? That’s the question the secular media have been asking me all week.
He’s got an interesting outlook in the rest of his article.
Peggy Noonan has more to add, about both Felt and Colson:
Were there heroes of Watergate? Surely many unknown ones, those who did their best to be constructive and not destructive, those who didn't think it was all about their beautiful careers. I'll give you a candidate for great man of the era: Chuck Colson. Colson functioned in the Nixon White House as a genuinely bad man, went to prison and emerged a genuinely good man. He told the truth about himself in "Born Again," a book not fully appreciated as the great Washington classic it is, and has devoted his life to helping prisoners and their families. He paid the price, told the truth, blamed no one but himself, and turned his shame into something helpful. Children aren't dead because of him. There are children who are alive because of him.
Now, as my own Canadian government wallows in corruption that might very well rank with Watergate when it all shakes down, I fume a bit. But I fume hopefully.
God moved in Chuck Colson’s life. Who else is he waiting to change? I must admit that I often forget the words of the Apostle Paul, in Timothy:
Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation.
Imagine if everyone did this. Who knows what craziness might happen. Bill & Hillary singing "I Saw the Light..." on Larry King? Or Kofi Annan designing programs that feed the hungry? Maybe this week I'll try adjusting my prayer habits a bit and see what happens...
Best wishes,
Leslie

Excellent piece Leslie, with a timely reminder to pray for our leaders, for all leaders...
