Very timely post personally.

Just last week after a workout I stopped at my local 7/11 to pickup some bread and milk. Outside of the store was a young man, disheveled, unkempt begging for some “change”. Since I NEVER give and because I only had a ten spot on me I told him “Sorry, no change’. But while making my purchase and making my way out of the store something changed my mind. While it was only around .52 cents I approached the young man and told him sternly but with some genuine sincerity “I know what your gonn’a do with this. Get some help”. He thanked me and said “Yes, Sir” .

Not sure if I affected the young man but at least I tried rather than my usual indifference. I truly hope he does someday get some help.

BTW, before you think should give to beggars you should watch this John Stossel video. The guy, or women, asking for money on the street probably isn’t homeless or even “poor” -

I am thankful for thoughtful mentors in my life. When I asked a favorite priest what I should do if asked for money, he told me he goes to some of the fast food places around town and buys $1.00 gift certificates. He always carries them with him, as priests are often asked for help. He uses his own judgment on how many to give to a person. (multi small cards are less likely to generate much cash for the recipient.)
This is not a difficult or expensive solution to those who live where begging is common. It does take forethought and care to have them on hand when needed, but that is what posts like this help with. It is something we should consider and then do. Doing the prep work is important to the giver. Getting these cards then faithfully carrying them (even if or until they are ragged from old age) is what a thoughtful Christian could do.

One could quickly go broke in downtown Chicago. I have a friend who often mutters under her breath, as we walk past the countless street people begging for money, "get a job" but occassionally she will give and it's usualy the dirtiest most strung out we've encountered that day, she'll look at me with a shrug and say, "who the hell is going to give him a job"
