They can't help it if they do not know about Ash Wednesday. But it likely is a sign that there is a lot more that they are not aware of.

It's not just religiously ingnorant, it's culturally ignorant and dull. Surely in the past they have come across others with the sign of ashes on their forehead, and they never had enough curiosity to inquire?

In this day and age when you can pop open a tag for google from a phone or a laptop (something most people stare at throughout the day anyway) ..its just lazyness.
There shouldnt be an excuse for someone to not look something up, or ask someone if they do not know. It's simply lazyness..
