Leah Libresco recently became a Catholic convert. She was an atheist.
Today she's got sound advice for anyone in the throes of their atheism in the form of an answer to a question posed by a member of the media as to her recent conversion:
What message do you have for other atheists who may be struggling and questioning their nonbelief?
I’d refer them to the Litany of Gendlin:
What is true is already so.
Owning up to it doesn’t make it worse.
Not being open about it doesn’t make it go away.
And because it’s true, it is what is there to be interacted with.
Anything untrue isn’t there to be lived.
People can stand what is true,
for they are already enduring it.If you find yourself in a position where you might need to change your mind, you should remember that your decision doesn’t change the world. You’ve always lived in whichever state of the world is true, so all you’re doing is changing how accurate your map is. (And you’re obviously better off accurate!)
Wisdom.
