The fact that George W. Bush could ever attain the presidency is only eclipsed by the fact that the next Republican Candidate looks to be Palin

Pelosi actually has credentials

Definition of an expert: Knowing more and more about less and less.

i'm sorry, you were trying to say something there i'm sure but i'm sure it was lost in pointless nonsense

"on the alter of egalitarian progressive socialism."

Egalitarianism (derived from the French word égal, meaning "equal") has two distinct definitions in modern English.[1] It is defined either as a political doctrine that holds that all people should be treated as equals and have the same political, economic, social, and civil rights or as a social philosophy advocating the removal of economic inequalities among people.
I see nothing inherently evil or "communist" about that

Progressivism is a political attitude favoring or advocating changes or reform. Progressivism is often viewed in opposition to conservative or reactionary ideologies. The Progressive Movement began in cities with settlement workers and reformers who were interested in helping those facing harsh conditions at home and at work. The reformers spoke out about the need for laws regulating tenement housing and child labor. They also called for better working condition for women.

again, i see nothing wrong with this statement. Unless you are pro unsafe, underpaid, and child labour.
i mean whats wrong with an employer making a buck right?

aaaaand finally

Socialism
Socialism refers to the various theories of economic organization which advocate either public or direct worker ownership and administration of the means of production and allocation of resources. A more comprehensive definition of socialism is an economic system that has transcended commodity production and wage labor, where economic activity is carried out to maximize use-value as opposed to exchange-value and thus a corresponding change in social and economic relations, including the organization of economic institutions and resource allocation; often implying advocacy for a method of compensation based on the amount of labor expended.
so basically a guaranteed and fair wage for any labour extended

please tell me what the problem with any of these ideas is?

so basically a system where you are all but garuenteed to be

By your choice of words and phraseologies, not to mention your spelling, it becomes immediately apparent that you are a resident of the UK. Either that, or someone attempting to give that impression.

Therefore, it is easily understandable why you would find both socialism and progressivism appealing. But do pardon us less that sophisticated colonials, if we don't relish the idea of either.

And..... as we (Americans)both see and are aware of the rest of the interpretive definitions that you seem to have omitted from your protestation and defense of socialism and progressivism?

Most relevantly being.....that socialism is "a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done."

I'd say that we are more than aware of the mechanisms involved and the deceptions employed by those who espouse their appreciation for either.

Albert - Europe is one big FAIL.

Us rubes don't wish to follow in your footsteps.

There - small words you should understand.

Canadian actually

Born and Raised Conservative and Christian and holding on to the Morals i was raised with. I just don't understand the phobia of "socialism" south of the border.
I love the social programs we have here supported by our higher tax base (virtually free and univeral health care, sports facilities, education incentives etc)
i may not like forking over as much as i do to the government but I've never really suffered for it.

Canadian.....Europe-lite!

"a social philosophy advocating the removal of economic inequalities among people."

You see nothing "communist" or "evil" about the government "removing" the economic inequalities among people?!?! How about the fact that it is EVIL to steal from the productive to give to the non-productive? What about a different translation of the above quote...perhaps "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need." Nah nothing communistic about that!

"I love the social programs we have here supported by our higher tax base (virtually free and univeral health care, sports facilities, education incentives etc)"

Neat point, and SO DARN CLOSE to being true....Well except for the fact that your virtually free and universal health care system wouldn't take out the tonsils of my son's girlfriend (even whenthey had swollen so badly that they were actually TOUCHING in the back of her throat....not neccessary according to the Health Service), so she had to cross the Detroit River to get the operation...

Oh and she tells us that the Canadian system is fine..IF you don't need any surgeries (waiting lists), or any medication (no prescription coverage unless you have private insurance)...other than that..it's swell. So swell that she lives in suburban DETROIT with her step-father instead of across the river in Windsor, Ontario because the schools and health systems are BETTER IN DETROIT!!!!

And lest you think she's one "exception" to the happy-canadian-health-care-member rule...I lived in suburban Detroit for 10 years and saw the FLOOD of your countrymen crossing the border for jobs, health care (Mrs Shifty is in the "industry", so to speak) and cheap consumer goods. Sorry Albie...your schtick doesn't fly.

Keep your euro-socialism..we "southerners" are just happy being "socialist-phobic". That so many of your countrymen join you in thinking
"i may not like forking over as much as i do to the government but I've never really suffered for it."
speaks volumes about the wussification of an entire nation!

"The fact that George W. Bush could ever attain the presidency is only eclipsed by the fact that the next Republican Candidate looks to be Palin"

Ah Albie, you're just mad because Ms. Palin has more stones than your entire government and 3/4 of your male population (I will stipulate to the possession of 'stones' by virtually ALL members of the Canadian Men's Hockey team...except that pansy Sidney Crosby) PUT TOGETHER! Quit bein' so scared of her, she won't beotch slap you guys too hard...

Oh and a parting shot...
the portion of your income you contribute to your government would surely be MUCH larger if your government had to adequately fund its own national defense..but since us rubes down south have been willing to do that for you since ya got off the Queen's teat.....

Yes....who was it recently opting for treatment south of the border? Danny Williams wasn't it? Didn't seem to like the alternative chest cracking in Canada. And according to him, 'his own doctors recommended that he seek treatment in America.' Fancy that.

And before that?

Wasn't it Liberal MP Belinda Stronach who sought out breast cancer treatment in America?

And as Shifty points out....how many other thousands of Canucks come south every year for the same.

Of course I imagine the large portion are those sticky evil rich people who simply haven't paid in 'their fair share' to properly fund the Canadian NHS.

Right mate?

out of curiosity do you pay for presctiptions?

honestly, if i made over 100k a year i'd probably come south of the border for major work too, America has taken the best of the best from the world and has them working in some of the best hospitals in the world

problem is that over 80% of people can't afford these doctors and hospitals

and frankly, coming from a middle class family i personally would have bankrupted my own family due to health problems from the age of 3-12 even WITH coverage had we lived south of the border

we have a more than adequate system of National Defense

we chose not to spend the entire budget of a modestly large country on policing the world and projecting our policies

and enough with the digs, i'm just trying to learn a few things here about the American Political system, don't forget I am myself a Christian and Conservative leaning individual

It's just that Bush's policies of removing checks and balances and moving more power to government while removing rights scares the shite outta me. And as far as Palin goes, i have nothing against her other than i've never really heard her say anything but rhetoric. I'm still working on finding out what her policy and what she wants to do because all i can hear is democrat bashing and ...well...rhetoric

PS and i have a 21 day old keeping me up at night, sorry i came across so combative.

there you go, proof that Canadians are too nice.

i'd like to hear some experiences from your point of view though, on how your own health care is from your own personal experience, whether you pay for prescriptions, surgery, broken arms all this and that and the other.

i've heard some horror stories and i want to know more about the facts

>>i'd like to hear some experiences from your point of view though, on how your own health care is from your own personal experience

Albert, you started this thread extolling the virtues of Nancy Pelosi because she has credentials, follow it up with a snarky remark or two, applaud the Canadian leftist healthcare system, then attempt to find common ground in the fact that you have been raised Conservative and Christian and finish off with the idea that you wish to find real facts from the personal experiences of real live 'mericans.

This is an interesting strategy. I don't understand it.

To the others...I am sorry. What I don't understand about my country is how many of its citizens spend their time poo-pooing your country and then valiantly proclaiming they are waiting for someone like Sarah Palin to come up with some policies before they can voice their approval. As though Sarah Palin's success will rise or fall on the Canadian vote.

Locutisprime you are right. Every high profile politician who has ever had a health scare goes fleeing for the border. Why? Because business competition breeds innovation in both advanced treatments and delivery styles. Plain good stuff delivered quickly. We hate that up here and we will drop dead on the emergency room floor hating it but we will die feeling blissfully self righteous.

Albert, if you are looking for an honest account of the health care system in America perhaps you should rent Michael Moore's Sicko because I hear that is a really well balanced factual doc-you-mentary.

"It's just that Bush's policies of removing checks and balances and moving more power to government while removing rights scares the shite outta me."

Then how in the blazing f--k can you extol Pelosi's "credentials"? Please man, think before you type. As Leslie points out, you preach the virtues of your centralized, government-run health care system, ponder how us "silly" southerners can be scared of a little socialism, yet think BUSH is eeee-vil for moving more power to the government?!?!?!

As far as my own experiences with health care.... I've experienced "government-run" health care, in the Navy, and it S-U-C-K-E-D!! A few examples....
Before enlistment, each potential recruit has to undergo a physical examination. On all of the paperwork I filled out for this examination, I honestly listed "athroscopic surgery to repair a partially torn ACL on my RIGHT knee" under the heading Previous Surgeries. When the time came for my actual exam with a medical officer (who was a LICENSED MD) would ou care to guess which knee he examined before proclaiming me fit for duty? You guessed it...the LEFT one...AFTER asking me not once but TWICE which knee I had surgery on in the 10 seconds it took me to climb up on the table!!!
Or there is the time I had a broken nose, suffered the night before a deployment (Don't ask...it involved a car door, my girlfriend, a group of punks and a glass bottle...). During my follow-up appointment aboard the carrier I was stationed on, the MD was truly perplexed as to why I didn't think I could wear a SCBA fire-figthing mask!!!!
How about the time I was diagnosed with virulent strep throat, given a shot of pennicillin and sent back to my workplace to infect my peers and students alike?
Since leaving Uncle Sam's employ, I've had various insurance policies, provided as a benefit of employment. They've run the gamut from the HMOs to PPOs to the current High-Deductible policy I opted for this year. I've gone from small co-pays for everything (including perscriptions) to paying out of pocket for everything (backed by a health savings account) up to 5 grand per year. The LEVEL of care has never wavered...EXCELLENT. The COST of care has varied, but has never been out of reach. Nor is it out of reach for the VAST majority of Americans. And the number of "uninsured" bandied about is sort of misleading, because, depending on the entity staing the figure, everything from illegal aliens to healthy young adults who CHOOSE not to purchase insurance are lumped in. The former DO NOT DESERVE to have health care provided by the law-abiding citizenry, the latter are excersizing their God-given freedom of choice.
All that being said, there are two major things that can be done quickly and easily to drive down the cost of insurance...allow it to be purchased across state lines, and enact meaningful tort reform. Neither of these do anyting to further the statist agenda though, so we'll not see Madame Pelosi championing them..

I am somewhat amused at your accounting for yourself and your country Albert. According to you, you have a 'more than adequate defense for what you represent as your modest country.

And you seem to believe that is adequate because Canada has made some wondrous decision of clarity, not to become embroiled in the worries of global threats.

Well of course the have. No need to worry or invest your country;s treasure, especially when the Americans are picking up the tab and hauling the water for the last seventy odd years.

AS for my experiences? And do I pay for prescriptions? I sure do. They run $10 apiece as that is my co pay. My doctors visits are $15 a pop And emergency room visits are $75 each unless I am admitted to hospital.

You say that you are Christian and conservative leaning. I would say that you need to stop leaning my friend and try standing for something.

Leaners are no better than flags in the wind IMO. Which ever way the wind blows and which ever seems the most convenient at the time are the only choices they seem to require.

And IMO, that is precisely why socialism is such an appealing concept for you and those of similar thinking. It requires seeming little effort or strain of decision making on the part of the individual. It requires only that you hand over all decision making and individual freedom to some collective of reasoning. And they will then dispense all the pleasures of life based upon someone else's concept of fairness.

Good luck with that, but as I have already noted by example, that doesn't seem to work out to well once the chips are down and health crisis is involved.

Thank you LP for so eloquently expounding on my point vis our northern neighbor's so-called "defense" spending. (No offense to any and all Canadian service members...you're doing the job!) It's just that your "leaders" don't feel the need to spend enough to ensure that you could successfully defend your country without aid!
Good thing Canadian security is integral with US security, eh? Sorta like the way you can blather on about your "wonderful" health care system (It's FREE! and UNIVERSAL!!!) yet all y'all sccot across the border when you REALLY need health care...

If I could interject...Canada is only one Prime Ministerial generation past decades of leftist Liberal governments who dedicated their time to obliterating it's military. Stephen Harper had been diligently rejuvenating it with new spending and our degree if involvement in the middle east has matched what we are able to offer with our resources at present. You don't snap your fingers and instantly return to a strong defence program over night, it takes time.

As you will find out, it takes a long time for a country to recover from leftist government "occupation". What Canada can say for herself right now is that her momentum is in the direction of revival. I hope that is the direction The US is heading since taking its turn with a strongly socialist president.

Leslie...

I remember the last seriously useless leftist American president, and the havoc he wreaked on our Miliatry. And I remember it took exactly ONE strong Conservative President to put us back on track...for a while.

I join you in the hope that the US is turning away from it's infantile flirtation with socialism. And I'll raise a toast to a militarily resurgent Canada (LaBatt's or Molsons...of course!)

Thanks Shifty.

We have had a string of decades of useless leftists in the big chair. One of whom drafted the Charter of Rights which gutted the power of parliament. So it takes a little time. I'm hopeful we'll get there.

Cheers to you too. :)

personally i see picking and running with a party/person rather difficult at the moment. You say stand for something, the problem is i see both (3/5) sides offering things i can stand for and things I can't really swallow. i like the Steward of the earth policies of the Green Party but think a vote for them is akin to throwing away said vote, the Conservative party (who i voted for) has too many issues with pulling funding from needed projects and not keeping corporations in line regarding paying their taxes and dues etc, the Liberals and the Bloc Quebecois can go fly a kite for all i care. If i were in the US it would be even harder for me i think

the Democrats have great ideas but support and stand for things i can't really get behind (abortion etc). The Republicans have a wonderful ideal of entrepreneurial spirit and such but at the same time seem to (in the upper echelon anyway) using fear and religion to push their own agenda.

Ab,

I'm glad you can't support the supporters of abortion. Help me see the great ideas you say the Dems have. I'm glad you appreciate the Republican spirit, but "fear and religion" are not exclusive to upper echelon Reps. You don't think the climate change (it is a religion for some) scare is being used to push an agenda?

You seem like a nice guy. I hope you'll stick around.

I'm a Moosehead or Alexander Kieth's fan myself

MOOSE-HEAD?!? Is that a beer or a peccadillo?! Seriously, I stopped drinking that in High School!

it's a beer, oldest independent brewery in Canada

Yes, as I said, I've sampled that particular brewery's wares....it would be nice if they weren't still selling the product they made in 1979......

Admit it Albert...Moose-Head is the "game" you play after one too many Molson's isn't it.....

sleemans is selling the same beers they were selling Capone many many moons ago

ps, molsen is horse piss

Real horse urine?!? Sources for this accusation please!

thousands dead in a country that the US had absolutely zero reason or right to invade is back on track?

declaring war on an idea is back on track?

you can't fight a religion with weapons of war, all it does is instill fervor and confirm their belief. Look at both the original Christian church and again the rise of the protestant movement, then again the mormons. It never works

I believe you may have a point Albert. Violation of UN resolutions and sanctions should never have been backed up with actual punitive actions and military intervention.

Why bring war and violence to a setting where the threat of war and violence is seen as the ultimate chip to be played.

Of course, there are always those tomes when threats don't seem to work and never have.

Never bring harsh words to a gun battle comes to mind.
