Join the media...

... and prostrate yourself before the saviour:

... it's fairly clear now that, with the near-certain nomination by the Democrats of Barack Obama everything is in place for the media to indulge in one of the greatest, orgiastic media fiestas of hero-worship since Elvis Presley.

You will not see a finer example of the genre than the cover story of this week's Newsweek, which was entitled “The O Team”. This rhapsodic inside account of Senator Obama's campaign reads a little like a cross between Father Alban Butler's Life of St Francis and the sort of authorised biography of Kim Jong Il you can pick up in any good bookshop in Pyongyang.

Mr Obama is portrayed throughout as an immanently benevolent figure. Not human really, more a comforting presence, a light source. He is always eager to listen to all aides of an argument, always instilling confidence in the weak-willed, resolutely sticking to his high principles and tirelessly spurning the low road of electoral politics. I stopped reading after a while but I'm sure by the end he was healing the sick, comforting the dying, restoring sight to the blind and setting prisoners free.

The panegyric included the now conventional wisdom in the media that Republicans have only ever won elections in the past 40 years through lies and fearmongering - smearing their opponents and spreading false fears that a vote for a Democrat would open the country to foreign invasion.

To be fair, the Newsweek credo was only the latest and perhaps most shameless phase of the pro-Obama liturgy in the media. Some cable TV channels prostrate themselves nightly before him. Most newspapers worship at the altar. They have already set up a neat narrative for the election between Senator Obama and John McCain in November - the Second Coming versus Old Grouchy, The Little Flower of Illinois up against the Scaremongering Axeman from Arizona.

Is Obama, with his incandescent smile and silky oratory, a once-in-a-century phenomenon who will blast open doors only to see them quickly close on less extraordinary blacks?

Or is he the lucky and well-timed beneficiary of racial dynamics that have changed faster than most people realized, a trend that presumably will soon yield more black governors, senators, mayors and council members?

Presidential campaigns have destroyed many bright and capable politicians. But there’s ample evidence that Obama is something special, a man who makes difficult tasks look easy, who seems to touch millions of diverse people with a message of hope that somehow doesn’t sound Pollyannaish.

At least Elvis understood he was an entertainer offering a couple of hours of fantasy and pleasantry, nothing more.

Obama is out to CHANGE the world. That's dangerous because he does not have the character or guts to BE what he should, let alone change a light bulb.

When Barack Obama announced his candidacy in Jan of 2007 most people, particularly Blacks, didn't even know how to pronounce his name let alone support him. I had followed Obama since his speech in 2004 at the Dem Convention and was particularly inspired by his stance against the Iraq War....a move that could have been political suicide. I started our grassroots organization www.Blacks4Barack.org in hopes of inspiring and invigorating support for Obama, particularly in the Black community at a time when Hillary had 82% of the black support. Keep in mind...black folks LOVED Bill Clinton (the first black pres.) But as folks (of all races) learned more about Obama...the more they were inspired. While the more we learned about Hillary....there was more, not only disappointment but actual hurt due to her and Bill's racist overtones. Because of her own actions, Hillary has lost the black vote....possibly forever. And whereas the media acts like all blacks are for Obama just because he's black....that is absolutely incorrect. Fact is, all blacks were for Hillary at first ! But now the black community feels like the Clintons have slapped them in the face....and in the heart....and that may be unforgivable. Despite the unfortunate divisiveness, the time is now for us all to unite...For The Re-Birth of America !
