This is your brain...

... this is your brain on America-hating liberalism:

[Helen Thomas]:   Why should we depend on him?

MS. PERINO:  Because he is the commander on the ground, Helen.  He's the one who is making sure that the situation is moving —

[Helen Thomas]:   You mean how many more people we kill?

MS. PERINO:  Helen, I find it really unfortunate that you use your front row position, bestowed upon you by your colleagues, to make such statements.  This is a — it is an honor and a privilege to be in the briefing room, and to suggest that we, at the United States, are killing innocent people is just absurd and very offensive.

[Helen Thomas]:   Do you know how many we have since the start of this war?

MS. PERINO:  How many — we are going after the enemy, Helen.  To the extent that any innocent Iraqis have been killed, we have expressed regret for it.

[Helen Thomas]:   Oh, regret.  It doesn't bring back a life.

MS. PERINO:  Helen, we are in a war zone, and our military works extremely hard to make sure that everyone has the opportunity for liberty and freedom and democracy, and that is exactly what they are doing.

I'm going to move on.

To which Gerard Vanderleun reacts:

Would somebody please put Helen Thomas out of her misery by hauling her off to the Washington Zoo, and making her the first journalist embedded in an elephant's anal pore? And when you do, could you please use a sledgehammer and an arc welder to make sure she stays put? And while you're at it, head first. Okay?

I think that'd be cruel and unusual punishment... for the elephant.

Hot Air has provided this video of the exchange:

If Gerard is willing to settle for a figurative and metaphorical implementation of his wish, I believe this is exactly what we just saw take place.

I mean, a mindset could position itself as being as sympathetic to Thomas' point-of-view as it's intellectually possible to be, and yet at some point still have to concede that the purpose of the assembly is to extract some hard information that might not otherwise be extracted, either because of administration shenanigans or because of a more innocent lack of dialog. The purpose of gathering in the room is to get facts out, to learn things. And Thomas' preaching, all the talk of "journalistic icon" and "living legend" and what-not notwithstanding, is simply not gettin' it done. Even if you agree with the preaching you have to admit that at some point. If you're sincere and honest about things.

This has been obvious to anyone paying attention, for quite some time now. Perino deserves a lot of credit for highlighting it, possibly to the extent that it's now clear to people not paying attention. And if I may dare say so, it's my belief that this is the kind of contribution to our nation's well being, that a man would have been unable to make. There are some situations in which a lady is allowed to speak more frankly. And the time has come where we as a nation probably can't exist any longer without that.
