There really is no debating it:
In the article, "Massive Misreporting in the Media Ignored", writer Harold C. Hutchison lays out several stories that the mainstream media (MSM) has failed to report on or, worse, reports rumors and lies.
Memos from Saddam's regime tying it to terror groups. Think Saddam had no links to al-Qaeda? Think again.
Reporting Lies about Guantanamo Bay. Several civilians died in riots over this issue.
The American efforts in the Horn of Africa. Huh? Yep. If you've been reading StrategyPage you'll know that fighting between anti-terror and Islamic terror forces continues in Somalia.
No terror attacks since 9-11 due to the success of our intelligence gathering. The MSM and many on the Left like to portray the Global War on Terror as being overblown on one hand, but squawk about Bin-Laden still being at large on the other. What, are is Bush supposed to clap his hands together and have Bin Laden appear in front of him in the White House Rose Garden?
Portrayal of the war on terror as a unilateral, American effort - as if it was some kind of derangement or mass hysteria on our part. This ignores the efforts of our allies, and worse, discourages them. Plus it completely forgets what happened under a crystalline blue sky in September 5 years ago. We didn't imagine people leaping to their deaths or being crushed and pulverized 5 years ago. We didn't make up Bin Laden's taking credit for the attack, or the glee of dancing Palestinians celebrating the deaths of 3000 men and women (or as Leftist Holy-Man Ward Churchill calls them "little Eichmanns") on that day.
Failure to question Al-Qaeda's media strategy. Any attempt by the American Government to influence opinion is written off as propaganda, whereas every tape from Al-Qaeda is reported without comment.
The level of progress in Iraq. Dean's World and other outlets have reported on the Good News about Iraq numerous times - yet pick up a copy of the New York Times or listen to NPR and you would swear it was 1971.
Even coalition efforts in Afghanistan get misreported. A recent Taliban offensive was predicted by the coalition, and shot to pieces - but MSM has reported death tolls of Taliban fighters killed mixed in with the civilian death toll even the the latter is 1/6th the former. This serves to promote the impression that the US forces only bomb wedding parties and civilians - which, strangely enough, fits into al-Qaeda's media strategy.
After close to 5 years, I'm beginning to wonder if there is more going on with the Mainstream Media than simple bias. As the Koran flushing incident shows, people die when lies are reported or facts misrepresented. As Hutchison points out in his piece, more people will die because of these errors, and I'm beginning to believe that something needs to be done.
I'm not sure what can be done other than to make sure that blogs like Dean's World get wider exposure and trusting that truth will prevail.
