Brutal honesty here: I've never understood how any marginally intelligent human could look at the Church and think the people in it would necessarily act significantly differently there as opposed to how people act out in the world.
The Church, while established by Christ himself, and undergirded by the Holy Spirit, is still composed of people. Sinful, failed creatures all. The difference is that, in the best of times and places, they recognize their failings and turn to Christ, seeking Him through the communion of believers within the body.
