Idiocy, plain and simple

06052005

Have you had enough of the MSM's focus on Koran abuse (and that's just Friday through Sunday)?

I have.

Thankfully, there are voices of reason out there who are putting things into perspective.  Proper perspective.

Austin Bay speaks with common sense:

The big joke, however, is on all of us who bother discussing the"Koran mishandling” issue– and that includes Newsweek and its initial “Koran flushing” report. Our focus is Mickey Mouse, in the pejorative sense Disney despises. The big story is the tragically dysfunctional Arab Muslim Middle East that exports its religious and tribal wars as mass terror. The secondary tragedy is spoiled, privileged fools who fail to realize their beautiful liberty is protected by awkward power – and I say awkward, not evil. (That’s an indriect way of telling Noam Chomsky to get a life.) Here’s the upside: The US and its allies –its overt and covert allies– are winning this intricate war, but like a bunch of yammering chumps we’re catatonic about kicking a Koran and a jerk urinating in a grate in Gitmo. Step back: the urine splashes a terrorist sitting a cell. It’s urine, man, not shrapnel, or a 767. Is this My Lai? Is this Nanking? Buchenwald? Stalin? 9/11? The Taliban in full flower? Saddam? How odd and small a focus is this? Will the Boomer Generation ever grow up?

Captain's Quarters cuts to the chase:

The media and the Leftist establishments such as the ACLU and Amnesty International use crap like this to set up impossible standards of behavior, then pretend that we're no better than our enemies when we fail to perfectly meet them. That's why AI used the "gulag" comparison earlier this week, and why Michael Isikoff and Newsweek decided to break the story that rampant abuse of printed material occurred at Gitmo. It's a deliberate attempt to undermine support for a war they don't like, and pathetically, Americans seem to have fallen for the hype.

La Shawn calls it lunacy and a mental disorder and includes this quote from Lawrence Auster:

“In resurgent Islam the liberal West has met its fate. Islam is a non-Western religion set on conquering and converting non-Muslims, while liberalism is a Western ideology set on tolerating and including non-Westerners. They are predators, we are prey. This complementarity spells the death of the West, unless there is a radical awakening on our part to the true nature of Islam and a willingness to oppose it.”

Gary Cruse wonders if we're too squeamish to prevail:

If we are, the squeamishness is reinforced by handwringing refusal to run pictures of victims diving from the Towers, coffins being unloaded in Maryland, and dead American soldiers because the powers that be think outrage would be generated.

Deprived of a sense of outrage, we are converted from flag-waving patriotism to yellow-ribbon yearning.  It is an ongoing process that makes success in warfare inversely proportional to the length of the war.  The longer it takes to win (and the war on terror is unwinnable in the closure sense), the less support survives beneath the onslaught of America-trashing, motive questioning, political opportunism, foreign criticism, and political cowardice.

The task is difficult, made more so by people I want to believe are well intentioned (but the evidence would suggest otherwise).

The war is being fought, clearly, on two fronts.  Abroad in places like Afghanistan and Iraq, and at home against an entrenched elite who by design or by sheer stupidity are doing that which emboldens the wrong side.

What really astounds me is that this is even "news" in the first place. By all accounts most of the incidents are what people used to call "accidents" (or do those even exist anymore?). And for the couple that were not, apparently the offending persons have already been disciplined.

Jeeze Louise! Have we all lost our senses? Hyperbole and shear lunacy seem to rule the day in America. What ever happened to benefit of the doubt, reasoned discourse with those who will withhold judgment and abject ridicule for those who won't?

Man, that felt good! Remind me never to take a prolonged absence from this site.

Fr. Tim
